COOL Reform Coalition Sends Letter to Hill Expressing Strong Support for HR 2393

Washington, DC (June 10, 2015) —The COOL Reform Coalition sent a letter to the House of Representatives yesterday, expressing strong support for HR 2393 as it moves towards a House floor vote this week. Over 100 Coalition members, representing a broad spectrum of industries, signed the letter emphasizing that the bill introduced by House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conway (R-TX) and Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), would effectively respond to the World Trade Organization's final ruling against the U.S. COOL requirements for muscle cuts of beef and pork.

Congressional action to bring the U.S. into compliance is critical as Mexico and Canada are moving to institute retaliatory tariffs. Reports have indicated these tariffs could total over $3.5 billion in the first year, causing irreparable harm to the U.S. agricultural and manufacturing economies. It would be intolerable for the United States to maintain, even briefly, requirements that have been deemed non-compliant by the WTO - rules that the U.S. was instrumental in writing. The COOL Reform Coalition strongly urges the House to pass H.R. 2393 when it comes to the House floor.
