COOL Reform Coalition Applauds Introduction of Sen. Roberts Amendment to Repeal Country of Origin Labeling and Urges Full Senate Support

Washington, DC (July 23, 2015)—The COOL Reform Coalition, representing more than 100 companies and associations from a broad spectrum of industries, applauds the introduction of an amendment by Sen. Roberts (R-KS) that would prevent costly retaliatory tariffs by Mexico and Canada by repealing U.S. Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) requirements for muscle cuts of beef and pork.

This amendment mirrors the action taken by the U.S. House last month when it passed HR 2393, and its enactment will bring the United States into compliance with obligations it has undertaken as a member of the World Trade Organization.

In order to avoid retaliation by Mexico and Canada that would lead to irreparable harm of the U.S. economy and endanger thousands of American jobs, full repeal is the only option. This threat is very real as both Canada and Mexico have already begun the retaliation process. We urge the Senate to pass this amendment and bring this impending economic crisis to an end.
